Hunker Down Farm

A Taste of Real

Welcome to Hunker Down Farm, a small local farm in lower Alamance County NC. We started in 2014 with a small batch of chickens, we quickly realized we had too many eggs, we started selling eggs to friends and family, and shortly we gained customers and friends. Our friends have encouraged us to expand , so Black Spanish Turkeys became the Thanksgiving mainstay, and Rouen Ducks provide fresh eggs and wonderfully moist, fresh meat. Last spring we added our two hives that overwintered and thrived.  This spring we drove to Georgia to get our pigs, American Guinea Hogs. We are looking foward to introducing our heritage pigs back to NC. Heritage breeds grow slower, more adapted to local conditions, taste better, and can breed naturally. These were the animals that were raised on farms and homesteads across the country, without these wonderful animals our ansestors would probably never have made it. These animals are endagered and we are helping to bring these animals back to survivability. We strive to bring great meat and breeding stock to the piedmont, we raise all our heritage animals with no antibiotics or hormones, our heritage animals are raised on pasture with minimal grains. We would love to show you how our animals are raised, and welcome all people to stop bye and look how animals should be raised. Breeding stock is raised for adaptablility, mothering abilities, breed conformation, and life on pasture. The Guniea Hogs and Black Spanish Turkeys are both listed on the Slow Foods Ark of Taste, they both scored higher than any other breed on the list.  Our Buckeye chickens provide some of the best eggs and meat of any breed.

Currently we have never used antibiotics, hormones, pesticides or herbacides. We strive to be a natural raised farm, where animal welfare is the upmost priority. Our chickens are allowed to be chickens and pigs allowed to be pigs, because thats what they are. Our pigs roam the woods, ducks invade the creek, chickens and turkeys roam free. There is nothing better than looking out the window and seeing the biodiversity that we are helping to cultivate.
